Quotes
So far, I have learned a lot about working with quotes and how to effectively integrate them into my pieces of writing. One of most useful tips about working with quotes was thinking about them as a “quotation sandwich” as stated in They Say I Say. This analogy helped me learn how, where, and when to use quotations in my writing. I now know to only use quotes that have strong relevance to my writing, and a quote whose relevance I can effectively explain to the reader. When using quotes it is also important to remember that you need to support the quote and “frame” it with an introduction before and an explanation after. This will help the reader understand why you as the writer chose that quote and how it relates to the writing you are doing. I will definitely keep this in mind while using quotes in my writing.
Another important thing to remember is to not underuse quotations, but at the same time do not overuse quotations. It is important to recognize other perspectives from other authors and experts, but only to strengthen your own argument in your piece of writing. Quotes are meant to add support and back up your argument, not be used to summarize someone else’s work or ideas.
