Homework – Globalization

In Kwame Anthony Appiah’s writing, The Primary of Practice, he discusses the idea of how globalization of certain industries obviously has its positives, but also its negatives. This was a particularly interesting concept for me because when people think of globalization, they think of increased communication, efficiency, and convenience, and I too thought the same. Appiah discusses how we have the ability of “contacting any other of our six billion conspecifics and sending that person something worth having” (Appiah 45). This is such a huge benefit to society and it is thanks to globalization, and it making a more interconnected world. I found this to be connected to an idea that Thomas Friedman makes in The Dell Theory of Conflict Prevention. Friedman however, looks at this as a more negative consequence of a super interconnected world, and that it is a way for people to transmit terror and obtain information through illegal means. One specific example is terrorist groups. They are able to post a video online and transmit terror to millions of internet users through the click of a button. He also states that, “With the Internet they don’t even have to go through Western or Arab news organizations but can broadcast right into your computer. It takes much less dynamite to transmit so much more anxiety” (Friedman 135). So through globalization, yes we are able to connect with anyone we wish to, but also people we do not wish to connect with are able to contact us.
