Electronic Health Records
Before our presentation on electronic health records, I had a basic idea of what it was and how nurses use it. But I really only had familiarity with Epic, and I didn’t have any idea of HealthInfoNet, but I was pretty amazed with how widespread it has become and the simplicity of it. I definitely know that the use of Electronic Health Records has completely transformed the health profession, especially nursing. Before the development of Electronic Health Records, patient charting was by hand on paper, and communication between various health teams was poor, which would ultimately affect the quality of patient care. With paper records, there is ample room for medical errors, unsafe practices, and sometimes inefficient care.
The development of the EHR has significantly improved the communication between health care professionals, which has led to improved patient safety and quality of care. Now, nurses can get provider orders at the click of a button, or critical lab results quicker than ever before. And with the help of HealthInfoNet, this can be shared with any hospital or care clinic providing that patient with care. When healthcare providers have access to complete and accurate records, patients receive better quality medical care.
My knowledge about Electronic Health Records will help my future career as a nurse tremendously. By knowing about the advantages and benefits of EHRs, and how far the development of them has come, I will be able to use them to provide the best quality of care to my patients. It will make my work more time efficient, with improved communication amongst my coworkers. I think the EHR will also make me more confident in my patient care, because if I am ever unsure of something, I have quick access to reliable resources and vital information.
