The Revision Process
During any writing process, revisions are essential. The two types of revisions that we instituted in our revision process were global and local revisions. We first started out with the global revisions. I had two of my classmates read my essay and even a friend outside my class. It really helped me with the organization and flow of my writing. The first global revision I did was adding more evidence from the authors and speakers we learned about in class. I realized I needed more specific evidence instead of just paraphrasing a lot of the points the experts made. The second global revision was reworking the organization of each of my body paragraphs. I realized, with the help of my peer reviewers, that I did not have a lot of comparing and contrasting of the experts, rather just one paragraph with one piece of evidence. In order to make my argument stronger, I added more pieces of evidence within each paragraph to include multiple viewpoints and supporting arguments. I think this really improved my essay. The third major global revision I did in my writing was adding Sanderson into my argument. At first, I just had Waldinger, Brooks, and Gilbert as my supporting arguments. But after listening to Sanderson’s speech again, I realized that her and I had a lot of the same opinions on what makes us happy – good relationships. I incorporated her ideas into my essay and I think that allowed me to dive even deeper into other reasons as to why good relationships make me happy and strengthen my essay.
Overall, I think the main global revisions I made between my first and second draft of my paper were essential and I would not be as content with my essay as I am now with my final draft. I think the revisions I made completely transformed my argument and strengthened it.
