Appraisal and Synthesis
Through evidence appraisal and synthesis, I discovered much more about my topic than I had known about it. I had always been aware of nurse burnout, but I didn’t realize how much of an impact nurse shift length actually had on patient safety. While doing extensive research and analysis of sources, I was able to find significant statistics about just how big of an impact it had, by significant decreases in overall patient safety. My overall opinion on the topic has not really changed after doing this research, if anything I agree even more that longer nursing shift lengths causes burnout quicker and has a bigger likelihood of decreasing patient safety and increasing the rate of nursing errors. My findings will impact my future nursing practice because I want to make sure my patients are receiving the safest and highest quality of care. If I cannot deliver that because I am too burnt out from working 12+ hours in a row, I would try and work shorter shifts or space out my shifts more. My teammate and I have been on the same page about the topic, and after these findings we both came to the same conclusion. We were able to collaborate our findings and discuss them with each other and dive into the topic a lot deeper than compared to the beginning of this project.
